At the conclusion of its 25th session held in Abuja on 17–18 February 2026, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) determined that a prima facie case of medical negligence had been established against three doctors: Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital; Dr. Titus Ogundare, Anaesthesiologist at Euracare; and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh, Chief Medical Director of Atlantis Paediatric Hospital.

The Council has since issued interim suspension orders against the trio pending the outcome of formal disciplinary proceedings.

These decisions follow an investigation triggered by a formal complaint submitted to the Council on 16 January 2026 concerning the death of Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the 21-month-old son of author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

In response to the complaint, medical practitioners from both Euracare and Atlantis Paediatric Hospital filed affidavits and appeared before the MDCN Investigative Panel to provide oral testimony.

After reviewing the submissions and testimonies, the Council concluded that sufficient grounds exist to proceed with disciplinary action, formally establishing a prima facie case of medical negligence and professional misconduct.

As the process unfolds, the case raises important questions about accountability, standards of care, and public trust in Nigeria’s healthcare system, how can institutions strengthen oversight to prevent tragedies like this in the future?
