The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has resigned from his position with immediate effect. The announcement was confirmed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who revealed that Badaru’s resignation was contained in a letter addressed to President Tinubu and dated December 1st, 2025.
Onanuga stated that Badaru stepped down on health grounds. The president has accepted his resignation and expressed gratitude for his services to the nation. Sources within the presidency indicate that President Tinubu is expected to inform the Senate of a new Defence Minister within the week.
Meanwhile, speculation is already rife across the nation. The former Chief of Defence Staff was recently invited to the presidential villa, sparking discussions among Nigerians who are linking recent developments and suggesting he could be the likely replacement. Many have confidence in his leadership and capabilities, which fuels this narrative.
This development serves as a reminder to office holders: when entrusted with positions of power, it is essential to serve the people faithfully. The trust and admiration Nigerians have for leaders like CG Musa may well influence decisions about who is best suited to lead the nation’s defence system.
But questions remain: Why is the Defence Minister resigning now? Could health truly be the sole reason, or are there other underlying factors? And will the former Chief of Defence Staff be the president’s choice to take over this critical role?
