Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule is pushing back against the widely held belief that kidnapping in Nigeria began in the North. Speaking on a recent TV program, he described the issue as a nationwide menace that has been years in the making.
According to him, the crime actually took root in the oil-producing South, where abductions of both foreign and local oil workers were once disturbingly common. He pointed to incidents involving companies like Tetra Tech as early signs of a problem that would later spread across the country.
Even with tensions running high, Governor Sule believes the situation is not beyond repair. What matters now, he says, is a united front and a willingness to confront the issue head-on.
Do you think regional cooperation among states could make a real difference in tackling insecurity?
