Kano Woman Dies After Alleged Surgical Negligence, Family Demands Justice

Aishatu Umar, a resident of Kano and mother of five, has died following what her family describes as a grave case of medical negligence at a public health facility. She passed away at about 1:00 a.m. yesterday, leaving behind her husband and children.

According to family accounts, Aishatu fell ill several months ago and underwent surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center in September. Following the procedure, she reportedly began experiencing persistent and severe abdominal pain. Despite repeated visits to the hospital over the course of four months, relatives say she was repeatedly given pain relief medication without further investigation into the cause of her suffering.

Two days before her death, her family says, that comprehensive tests and scans were conducted. The results allegedly revealed that a pair of surgical scissors had been left inside her abdomen during the September operation. Plans were reportedly being made to carry out a corrective surgery, but Aishatu did not survive long enough for the procedure to take place.

The family has raised serious concerns about professional accountability within the healthcare system. They argue that such an error, if confirmed, represents a troubling level of negligence and weaken public confidence in medical institutions.

The family is calling on the Kano State Government and relevant health regulatory authorities to launch a full investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. They say justice must be served to honor Aishatu Umar’s memory and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As questions mount and calls for accountability grow louder, will this case prompt a deeper reckoning with patient safety and oversight in Nigeria’s public hospitals?
