The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three health officers attached to the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre following a medical incident that resulted in the death of a patient after surgery.

The decision, which takes immediate effect, followed a preliminary review by the Board that identified alleged breaches of professional conduct and failure to comply with standard medical procedures during the patient’s treatment. Officials said the suspensions are meant to create room for a thorough and impartial investigation.

The case has been referred to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee, which will assess the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the extent of professional responsibility. The committee is also expected to recommend any disciplinary or regulatory measures in line with medical ethics and existing laws.

In a statement, the Board stressed that the action is purely administrative and should not be interpreted as a final verdict on the matter. It reaffirmed its commitment to patient safety and accountability, while offering condolences to the family of the deceased and assuring the public of stronger oversight in public health facilities.

As investigations continue, will the outcome of the Ethics Committee’s review lead to broader reforms in Kano State’s healthcare system?
