UNILAG MSSN Mourns Passing of English Graduate, Maryam Agoro

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter, has joined the university community, students, alumni, and the wider Nigerian Muslim ummah in mourning the passing of Maryam Agoro, a graduate of the Department of English, who died just a day after participating in the institution’s 56th convocation ceremony.

Maryam’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief and reflection across campus and on social media, where many described her as a promising young Muslimah whose journey symbolised resilience, faith, and quiet excellence. News of her passing came as a shock, especially following the joy and fulfilment that accompanied her successful completion of her academic programme.

In a statement, members of the MSSN expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that Maryam’s life and sudden return to Allah serve as a sobering reminder of the transient nature of worldly achievements. They emphasised that while human beings may dream, plan, and strive to achieve their goals, the ability to truly enjoy the fruits of those struggles ultimately rests in the mercy and decree of God.

“It is one thing to dream and to achieve those dreams,” the statement reflected, “but it is only by the mercy of Allah that one enjoys the journey, the struggle, and sees the full fruition of those dreams.”

Fellow graduates, classmates, and lecturers have continued to pay tribute to Maryam, remembering her for her dedication, gentle character, and commitment to her faith. Many described her convocation attendance as a moment of triumph that highlighted years of perseverance, making her sudden passing even more poignant.

The University of Lagos community has been urged to keep her family in prayers, asking Allah to forgive her shortcomings, accept her good deeds, and grant her Al-Jannah Firdaus. Condolence messages have also called for strength and comfort for her loved ones during this difficult time.

Maryam Agoro’s story, marked by achievement and an abrupt farewell, has left behind a powerful lesson on life, faith, and the ultimate dependence of human success on divine mercy.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
