What started as a one-day kitchen garden training has swiftly grown into a powerful story of action, impact, and possibility for Nigeria’s agricultural future.
Delivered by the Centre for Dryland Agriculture, HarvestPlus Nigeria, and the Propcom+ Project, the training has already produced tangible results.
All 46 Kano State students who participated in the NutriQuiz and NutriKitchen competitions at the Nutritious Food Fair 2025 have successfully established kitchen gardens in their schools and communities.
At Government Science Secondary School, Sharada, the effort has moved beyond planting, students have proudly harvested their first cucumbers, marking a milestone that demonstrates the power of practical, hands-on learning.
This achievement is more than a harvest; it is proof that youth-centred, nutrition-sensitive agricultural education works. By combining classroom knowledge with real practice, students are developing practical skills, growing confidence, and learning the value of biofortified and nutrient-rich crops in improving diets and combating hidden hunger.
The success builds on the legacy of the HarvestPlus Nutritious Food Fair, now in its eleventh year, which has become a national platform for promoting nutritious diets, biofortified crops, and inclusive food systems.
Each year, the fair brings together policymakers, researchers, agribusiness leaders, NGOs, and young people to explore practical solutions to malnutrition, inspire innovation, and demonstrate that agriculture is not just a livelihood but a pathway to healthier communities and economic growth.
Through initiatives like NutriQuiz and NutriKitchen, HarvestPlus continues to spark curiosity and action among young people. The Kano kitchen gardens show what happens when inspiration is paired with opportunity: ideas take root, skills are activated, and tangible results appear quickly.
For stakeholders across agriculture, nutrition, and development, the message is clear: when young people are equipped with knowledge, supported with training, and given space to practice, they deliver. These small kitchen gardens may be modest in size, but they represent a big future, where youth are active contributors to food security, healthier diets, and sustainable agricultural systems.
The seeds planted by HarvestPlus and its partners are already feeding hope and nurturing the next generation of nutrition-smart farmers.
