Struggles are an inevitable part of life, just as growth, purpose, and fulfillment are. Yet a difficult question remains: how many people walk through physical or mental struggles and emerge alive, whole, healthy, and truly happy?
Every day, people rise to pursue dreams and aspirations. Some appear enthusiastic, confident, and fulfilled, as though life has offered them its finest gifts. However, beneath many of these smiles lie silent battles that are rarely spoken about.
In some cases, people even joke about their pain, not because it is insignificant, but because they feel pressured to maintain the image of the “strong” or “happy” person society, friends, and family have come to expect. Sadly, those experiencing mental health challenges, especially depression or anxiety, often appear the most cheerful. Their smiles can become a shield.
Recently, the passing of a poet and media personality popularly known online as Lazywrita deeply shook many. A message he had scheduled before his death was later shared, encouraging people not to mourn him and stating that he had lived an adventurous life. His fans and friends were left heartbroken and confused, as he had never publicly shown signs of distress. He appeared lively, joyful, and full of life. This painful moment reminds us of an important truth: not all struggles are visible.
For many, it is not one factor alone, but a combination of several that makes mental health challenges overwhelming.
We are often reminded to check on our loved ones, to ask questions when they withdraw, lose interest in things they once loved, or begin to feel distant. Equally important, we must learn to value life, even in the midst of storms. Life is still worth protecting, nurturing, and choosing, every single day.
Seeking help is not a sign of weakness. Offering support is not optional. Gratitude, empathy, understanding, and hope truly matter. And when Plan A doesn’t work, there is always a Plan B and sometimes even a Plan C.
As we bring this year to a close and step boldly into 2026, African Media and Communications Consulting encourages everyone to listen to their bodies, protect their mental well-being, cherish their lives, and seek help when things feel overwhelming. Knowing when to ask for help can save lives.
As a digital media organization, we recognize that the content people consume has a powerful impact on their mental and emotional health. We therefore remain committed to sharing information that not only informs, but also uplifts, supports, and promotes emotional, physical, and mental wellness.
Thank you for being part of our journey.
Here’s to a healthier, more compassionate, and more mindful 2026.
What signs help us recognize when someone is silently asking for help, even while they are smiling?
