The Federal Government on Tuesday paid tribute to Nigeria’s fallen heroes at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) wreath-laying ceremony held at the National Arcade, Abuja, with Vice President Kashim Shettima representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the solemn event.

The ceremony, organised by the Defence Headquarters, reflects a newly redesignated observance that combines the celebration of serving military personnel with the remembrance of fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of Nigeria. The renaming highlights the Armed Forces dual mandate of honouring both active service and past sacrifices.

At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, solemn tributes were paid to members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, highlighting their courage, discipline, and unwavering commitment to national unity and sovereignty. The event featured a moment of reflection and the ceremonial release of white doves, symbolising peace and the nation’s enduring gratitude to its military.

The observance served as a reminder of the critical role played by the Armed Forces in safeguarding Nigeria’s stability, while reinforcing a collective national resolve to uphold the values for which fallen heroes gave their lives.

How can Nigeria further strengthen institutional support and public recognition for its Armed Forces while promoting lasting peace and security nationwide?
