Lamido Sanusi earns N442 million from MTN board role, highlighting the growing influence of corporate governance in Africa.

Lamido-Sanusi

The Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, received total compensation of N442 million ($324,000) from MTN Group for the 2025 fiscal year, highlighting the telecom giant’s financial recovery and the increasing strategic importance of non-executive directors in corporate governance.

The payout marks a rise from N412 million recorded in the previous year. Sanusi, who has served on MTN’s board since July 2019, earned a combination of retainer fees, board meeting allowances, and additional compensation tied to strategy sessions and special assignments.

As a member of key committees, including risk management, finance, and social ethics, Sanusi plays a critical role in overseeing MTN’s operations across major African markets such as Nigeria and Ghana.

Beyond MTN, he chairs Black Rhino Management Services Limited and holds multiple corporate directorships, reflecting a growing trend of high-level cross-sector leadership among African elites.

For professionals aiming to access similar opportunities, industry experts emphasize the importance of building deep domain expertise, maintaining a strong professional reputation, and cultivating strategic networks within corporate and policy circles. Long-term career positioning, rather than short-term gains remains critical to accessing board-level roles.
