Adebayo Adelabu has officially stepped down from his role as Minister of Power, with his resignation taking effect at the end of April. The decision, announced on Wednesday, was communicated in a letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to President Bola Tinubu through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

In his letter, Adelabu described his departure as a necessary step to ensure a smooth transition, expressing “deep honour and profound gratitude” for the opportunity to serve. He highlighted his contributions to ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector and thanked the President for the trust placed in him.

The former minister explained that his resignation is driven by his intention to fully pursue his long-standing governorship ambition in Oyo State, an aspiration he traced back to 2016 during his tenure at the Central Bank of Nigeria. He also noted that he previously resigned from the apex bank in 2018 to chase the same goal.

Adelabu further pointed to provisions in the amended electoral law, which restrict public office holders from contesting elections while in office, as a key factor influencing his decision.
